How Avandia Made Me Feel and Act
By Elaine Karas-Shadle
I am a type 2 Diabetic since 2002 and I had some issues with a medication I was on for a few years. I don't know if all my issues are common with others taking this medicine, but if I can help someone out there who is new to this and having noticeable behavior changes, then I'll feel I have helped another Diabetic.
I was put on Avandia 2 years ago in 2006 by a doctor I went to due to my work schedule. He took care of me when my schedule did not allow me to continue with my regular physician. My sugar levels were up so he put me on Avandia. At first, the medicine gave me loose bowels and an upset stomach. After being on it awhile, I started feeling very tired, and I'd take naps at all hours of the day and night. I had trouble sleeping at night. My appetite grew bigger, I was snacking a lot more. I had always been a pack rat, but the illness of saving everything got so bad that I couldn't even sleep in my own bed since 2006, shortly after I started Avandia.
A few weeks ago my regular physician, whom I've been able to again see since fall 2008, took me off of Avandia. I have more energy and actually put in two 8 hour work days at my merchandising job. I don't nap as much, my bedtime hours are more normal and I don't wake up as often. I am not as hungry as I was when I took Avandia. Last night I slept in my bed for the first time since 2006. Granted I have 4 bags of garbage to throw out.
I am writing this because, as a type 2 diabetic, I don't know if the medicines cause these types of behaviors in everyone, but if someone is having similar issues, they might want to talk to their doctor soon about getting off of Avandia and try another route. My doctor has increased my Metformin dosage and for me this is working. My levels are getting lower. When I took both Metformin and Avandia, my levels were in the low 200s at times. I've not yet gone past 200 since Avandia was removed from my med list.
